Mt. Rogers Anne Makes a Cake

We were camping at Hurricane Campground and we were all sitting around the fire one night in “Party Central,” (the campsite where everyone tends to gather except for meal times) Anne came walking through the woods from her campsite next door. She was carrying an old fashioned popcorn popper-the rectangular kind with a sliding screen top that you use over the fire.

Anne didn’t have popcorn in the popper though, she had mad a cake and was holding it over the fire in order to bake it. Occasionally she would disappear back through the woods to her campsite to assumably, check on the cake, then she would reappear and continue holding the popper over the fire.

We all sat and watched silently, thinking our thoughts and enjoying the fire and each other’s company. Finally, Anne returned from one of her ventures back to her campsite with a couple of slices of her “cake” on a paper plate. Anne’s husband took the plate and made his way around the circle of people sitting around the fire allowing each one to taste the concoction. Anne did mention that she had forgotten to add the sugar to the recipe but that we could just use extra whipped cream. Each person dutifully tasted the cake. Each person, that is, except Mark who had stepped away from the fire just before the tasting having missed the whole thing. Mark returned to the circle and before he sat down he was offered a bite of Anne’s “cake.” He put the bite into his mouth and then proceeded to spit it out and exclaim, “That Sucks!” We all burst out in laughter! Mark had said exactly what everyone else had been thinking. Thank you for your honesty Mark! And thank you for the cake Anne.
